Who is an adequate person and what is adequacy?

Adequacy is a term considered within the framework of the whole society and individual situations. Today, as a rule, such criteria of human adequacy are identified as restraint of emotional reactions, social activity, sociability, setting goals and the desire to realize them, the ability to feel a wide range of feelings, and the correspondence of the emotional response to the situation. The concept of adequacy means a person’s compliance with existing circumstances, situations, expectations, established standards, views, and social norms. In epistemology, it means supposedly complete or absolute correspondence with something.

General definition

The term has synonyms: correspondence, identity. Most often it is used to characterize human behavior. Actions that comply with generally accepted rules and culture are considered adequate.

Adequacy

Arriving home, we undress, hang warm outerwear on a hanger, and put our shoes on the shelf. This is appropriate behavior. Imagine that a colleague came to work and instead of sitting on a chair, he sat on the desk and put his feet on the chair. He whistles songs and even forgot to say hello. This does not meet the standards and is therefore considered inadequate.

When we sit down to eat at a party, we eat our food carefully, trying not to make unnecessary noise. At home, we can eat something with our hands (especially if we are very hungry), chew and talk at the same time. How will society and our family perceive this?

These examples provide a deeper understanding of what adequacy is. After all, actions in one situation are quite appropriate, but in another they are unacceptable. If you are accused of inadequacy, this is a subjective opinion and not a reason to panic. Perhaps you are simply unpleasant to the person.

Meaning

The explanatory dictionary states that the object of study has only one meaning: “Completely corresponding, coinciding.” For example, “The price of the car is adequate to its appearance and technical power.”

The word already feels at home in the Russian language, which is why the adjective ended up in the explanatory dictionary; there is no place for strangers there.

It should also be said that our hero also has a colloquial meaning. In ordinary, everyday speech, this is what is called something that is consistent with the concepts of the norm. When they say, for example, “an adequate person,” this means that a man or woman does not have any mental abnormalities or quirks, and they have a completely tolerable character. In other words, they can be dealt with. When they say that a person is inadequate, then he does not necessarily have to be crazy in the clinical sense, but it is definitely difficult to come to an agreement with him.

It cannot be said that the lexical meaning of the word “adequate” is so difficult; the main thing is to look into the dictionary more often, because that’s where everything is recorded.

Where is the line between adequacy and its opposite?

Some people are so scrupulous and dependent on public opinion that they put it at the forefront. A person understands what adequacy is and fully acts in accordance with established boundaries. At the same time, he is guided only by norms and leaves no room for making his own decisions.

There are cases when there is no need to talk about adequacy at all. A person’s behavior and morality not only deviate from their usual boundaries, but become dangerous to others. These are clear signs of mental illness, the diagnosis of which should be made by a psychiatrist.

Extremely inappropriate behavior that contradicts established or established norms in society is called deviant behavior. There is no single explanation for this behavior. Some explain the deviations by sudden changes in society, others associate them with shortcomings in upbringing. The main forms of manifestation are crime, alcoholism, drug addiction, prostitution, sexual perversion, suicide, self-torture, excessive aggression.

But there are also less obvious manifestations of inadequacy , manifested by the strange behavior of people who:

  1. They keep many animals in city apartments, large dogs, large or dangerous animals (snakes, for example).
  2. They appropriate other people's things and single-handedly occupy common space.
  3. They swear, discuss, criticize, blame other people for all their troubles.
  4. They deceive, pretend, simulate, try to evoke condescension towards themselves with a false situation.
  5. They show aggression instead of any arguments, use physical measures of education.
  6. They show excessive religiosity and hostility towards representatives of other religions.
  7. They look for signs of gender inequality in every action or a way to emphasize this inequality.
  8. They destroy the environment: they cut down trees, poison water bodies, and hunt purely for sport.

Most of these actions are explained not by mental disorders, but by selfishness. Moreover, these people consider their behavior absolutely normal. Sometimes they are simply annoying, sometimes they literally suck the energy out of others and poison their lives. Psychologists even came up with a common name for them - “toxic people.”

Adequacy and age

Society strictly ensures that a person’s behavior and clothing style correspond to his age. It is necessary to accept guidelines and values in order to look decent, first of all, for yourself. An elderly woman or man who repeats the behavior of teenagers looks amazing. It’s strange to hear obscene or teenage slang from the lips of elderly women.

At the same time, when a child tries to imitate adults, everyone is touched and does not take it seriously. Adequately assess your age and adjust your behavior so as not to lose yourself. Older people should adequately perceive reality and remember responsibility. Young people must understand that adulthood will definitely come, and then only memories will remain of their youth.

Etymology

The word is of Latin origin. Adaequatus means "equalized" or "equalized". Despite the fact that etymologically the word comes from Latin, it seems that Russian people adopted it not from the original source, but from English. In her famous work “The Living and the Dead Word” (1972), Nora Gal condemns translators who copy and translate using the word “adequately”. It is better, she believes, to replace the definitions with “equivalent” or “equivalent.” We'll talk about this later when we talk about synonyms. For now, let’s move on to the immediate meaning of the word “adequate.”

What is adequacy in science?

The term is actively used in many sciences, including mathematics, physics, and econometrics. It applies to models that are being researched. If the calculations made are correct, and the finished model showed the intended result, the adequacy test has been passed.

By examining the object, developers determine what options there may be if the model fails, and whether this is possible. If the results fully correspond to the calculations, it is customary to say that the design is adequate. The conflicting results make us think and re-evaluate the original studies.

“Positive” and “adequate” are quirks of the colloquial language

The reader, immersed in the modern information flow, probably recognized the phrases that are placed in the subtitle. We cannot ask and beg him not to use them, because sometimes they say so in films and books, but still it would be better if the consumer of book and cinema products forgot about them forever.

“Adequately” is an even more truncated form of the second meaning of the word that we are considering. To be fair, we must say that we have no arguments against it, other than the complete cacophony of the phrase. But if it does not offend the reader’s taste, then he can, of course, leave it in his dictionary.

“On the positive” is a harmless phrase, but contains an ambiguous connotation. They say: “This person is positive all the time.” It’s as if positivity is a psychotropic substance. In other words, constant and, as a rule, causeless fun raises some suspicions. And in this case, too, we recommend abandoning the phrase solely for reasons of euphony.

In any case, of course, all advice is advisory in nature, and besides, you cannot impose your taste on anyone. One way or another, we hope that the reader has understood the meaning of the word “adequate”, and this question will not cause any more difficulties.

The meaning of the word is adequate

“Adequate to the meaning of causality” in the history of logic is the fact that in the presence of a certain subjectively meaningful connection of various considerations on logical issues (“the state of the problem”), an idea “comes to mind” that approaches a solution of the correct type, in principle similar to that how the orientation of behavior toward a reality known “experimentally” seems to us specifically “adequately causally determined in its meaning.”

Moreover, we should not forget that the orthodox Christian Lord God is also not a fiction, not an image of a “non-existent object,” but an inadequate image of a very, very real object, namely, an image (reflection) of the real power that is acquired over people and by their consciousness the forces of social development that are beyond their control and incomprehensible to them - their own collective forces, opposing them as something alien and even hostile, not only in fantasy... If we do not forget this, then Hegel’s theological allegories will become understandable for us, who understand that God no, but that there is a real - and damn real - power of the collective forces of people over an individual with his individual consciousness and that this power (which becomes tyrannical under certain conditions) is somehow - adequately or inadequately - realized by this individual, and being realized, it is done the most important component of his subjective thinking, the regulatory scheme of his thoughts, his reasoning.

We must be sure that the system does not have “internal” failures, that it is “healthy”, in every sense of the word, that it is able to adequately exist and adequately respond to applied influences.

A sensitive person is capable of not only adequately perceiving, but also loving the entire Universe, but the Universe is not capable of adequately perceiving, much less loving, one individual person.

If this condition is satisfied, one can say that the use of the term “true” is materially adequate or simply adequate.

Among other things, this means that you are finally able to adequately perceive what you hear and, accordingly, adequately answer questions.

But, of course, only representatives of the educated class, within which the main struggle over these ideas took place, could adequately understand and experience this complex synthesis, adequately comprehend this new Roman ideology without its vulgar distortion.

To scour those places - once they’ve reported it, it means it’s our duty to respond adequately to it,” Strakhanov was very fond of this word “adequately” and used it for almost any occasion, firmly believing that it was precisely for his “civilized speech” that he was made permanent, in fact, the chairman.

So tight that Walter once managed to take an electroencephalogram of the brain activity of Norbert Wiener, who had a tendency to spontaneously fall asleep in the most inadequate environment (for example, during lectures), and found out that the brain of the father of cybernetics during such sleep is in a waking state and is able to adequately process information.

What is inappropriate behavior?

Inappropriate behavior is a visible manifestation of existing or emerging serious mental illnesses. However, at the everyday level this does not always correspond to the actual presence of them in a person. This is a very important aspect.
