After the first use, the drug causes a sharp release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that signals the presence of a “reward.” Dopamine grabs attention and orders you to consume the substance that triggered the reaction, or to repeat the action that caused the previous release. Most drugs also increase the level of “feel good hormones” – endorphins, serotonin, norepinephrine. A powerful neurobiochemical combination leads to the formation of addiction.

Chronic use of the substance triggers a mechanism that scientists call the “molecular lever of addiction.” If the drug is taken regularly, a transcription protein accumulates in the neurons of the brain's reward system, which helps the brain take into account previous experiences. The molecules of this protein cause long-term changes in dopaminergic neurons, making them more susceptible to the substance that triggered the process. Thus, for cocaine addicts, the opportunity to use cocaine (and only cocaine) provokes an avalanche-like release of dopamine. Thus, using a drug trains the brain to want it more and more.

Brain cells that have undergone such changes become less susceptible to other rewarding stimuli: they now have a “master.” If you try to tempt them with something else, they won't give in. A cocaine-tuned reward system will want cocaine rather than a home-cooked meal or a beautiful sunset. Once the molecular lever is turned on, all the symptoms of addiction begin to appear. I want exactly this, and not something else; a person is ready to sacrifice something in order to get a “reward”; and if you can’t get it, withdrawal begins.
